ADRO Collection

 

Lisbon as an Adro reimagines the outdoor furniture found across Lisbon’s squares, courtyards, gardens and adros, through a collection of tables, chairs and supports that bring together stone and aluminium.

 

 

The Adro, a space adjacent to a church, highlights two central themes: material and geometry. Lisbon stone, expressed through limestone, provides the physical support and foundation of the collection, celebrating a city shaped by tradition and hand-carved memory. The geometry is expressed through aluminium pieces inspired by classical forms found in sacred architecture. Cut and folded without welding, the reusable metal draws on the metallic origami “Oritetsu” by Sam Booth and follows the principles of ergonomics, structure and geometry.

 

The collection begins with a 1500 × 1500 mm sheet of aluminium, producing a table (750 × 750 mm), a chair (375 × 375 mm) and a support (250 × 250 mm). Fragmented limestone blocks in variable dimensions ground the lightweight metal within the space. 

 

Lisbon as an Adro reflects Lisbon through a harmonious tension between present and past, industrial and artisanal, global and local.

 

The work was first presented at Casa Aether by AB+AC Architects as part of the LDW26 programme.

Frederico Oliveira Vaz lives and works in Lisbon. After completing a Master’s degree in Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture – University of Lisbon (FAUL) and at the Facoltà di Architettura – Politecnico di Torino (Polito) in 2017, he start working at the studio Aires Mateus.
In 2020, he founded +3a.arch. His work is driven by a search for knowledge and ways of engaging with architecture, realised through more than 115 collaborations including Gonçalo Byrne, Ooda, Masslab, Studio Gameiro and Anne Holtrop.
Within this context, he has developed initiatives such as “hic sunt architectus” – a series of interviews with architects he has collaborated with; “introduction to the profession” – a workshop for architecture students bridging the gap between university and professional practice; and the design of products and furniture collections, which in this case has led him to here.
